BACKGROUND
Misoprostol is widely used in combination with mifepristone for medical termination of pregnancy. We studied the endocrine parameters of trophoblast function during medical termination of early pregnancy using mifepristone in combination with oral or vaginal misoprostol. The effect of prolonged misoprostol administration was also examined.
METHODS
Thirty-four women, requesting termination of pregnancy and with <or=63 days of amenorrhoea, received 200 mg of mifepristone on day 0…

This study confirms that s-hCG levels drop sharply after medical abortion, and recommends that clinical examination to be combined with determination of s- hCG to assess the completeness of medical abortion.

It is shown that low doses of MIS do not induce abortions in cats but increase the effect of AGL, and the combination of misoprostol and aglepristone provides a more effective abortifacient than using either of them alone.

Treatment with mifepristone, a competitive antagonist of the progesterone receptor, resulted in a significant and rapid fall in concentrations of inhibin pro-alpha C, identifying a link between production of pro- alpha C and luteal steroidogenesis in early human pregnancy.

The regimen appears as effective, in terms of high complete abortion rate and low continuing pregnancy rate, as any published alternative, and has the benefit of being less costly as the dose of mifepristone is 67% lower and misoprostol is substantially less expensive than gemeprost.

The addition of one intramuscular injection of 16‐phenoxy‐PGE2 on the fourth day of treatment with RU 486 (25 mg twice daily) significantly increased the abortifacient effect of the antiprogestin during early pregnancy and the present study suggests that a shorter treatment may be possible.
