The jaguar in the Atlantic Forest

title={The jaguar in the Atlantic Forest},
  author={Beatriz de Mello Beisiegel and D{\^e}nis Al{\'e}ssio Sana and Edsel A. Moraes},
Jaguars Panthera onca are Critically Endangered (A4 b c d; C2 a i) in the Atlantic Forest because a population reduction of 50-90% was estimated in the past 10-15 years in the largest subpopulations of jaguars at the Upper Paraná and is suspected at the Coastal Atlantic Forest. The causes of reduction have not ceased since there is a continuous decrease in the Extent of Occurrence EOO, Area of Occupancy AOO and habitat quality, plus retaliatory and sport killing. The total number of mature… Expand

A biodiversity hotspot losing its top predator: The challenge of jaguar conservation in the Atlantic Forest of South America
The jaguar is the top predator of the Atlantic Forest, which is a highly threatened biodiversity hotspot that occurs in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, and by combining data sets from 14 research groups across the region, the population status is determined and a spatial prioritization for conservation actions is proposed. Expand
Population status of the jaguar Panthera onca in one of its last strongholds in the Atlantic Forest
Abstract Remaining jaguar Panthera onca populations in the Atlantic Forest are restricted to eight regions, and all populations appear to be declining. We report on the status of one of the lastExpand
Implications of Fine-Grained Habitat Fragmentation and Road Mortality for Jaguar Conservation in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil
The utility of linking habitat and demographic models in assessing impacts on species living in fragmented landscapes is demonstrated, whereby populations with highly fragmented habitat are maintained only by dispersal from populations with less fragmented habitat. Expand
Jaguar (Panthera onca Linnaeus, 1758) roadkill in Brazilian Atlantic Forest and implications for species conservation.
To minimize the impacts associated with the BR-101, its lines duplication along the 15 km stretch traversing the Linhares-Sooretama block is recommended, and the deviation of the current route or the construction of overpasses to fauna in the most critical points are suggested. Expand
Are we headed towards the defaunation of the last large Atlantic Forest remnants? Poaching activities in one of the largest remnants of the Tabuleiro forests in southeastern Brazil
Protection activities must be intensified to effectively combat the impacts of poaching in the LSB region, thereby contributing to the conservation of species in one of the few Atlantic Forest remnants whose original species composition still remains intact. Expand
The jaguar's spots are darker than they appear: assessing the global conservation status of the jaguar Panthera onca
Abstract The IUCN Red List is widely used to guide conservation policy and practice. However, in most cases the evaluation of a species using IUCN Red List criteria takes into account only the globalExpand
New record of the Jaguar, Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758) (Felidae), from a mosaic of Atlantic Forest in the Paraná state, Brazil
A new record of Jaguar is provided in Parana state, in an area occupied by a mosaic formed by native vegetation and silviculture, and represents a new recent locality of the species for the biome in which it is classified as Critically Endangered of extinction. Expand
First record of intestinal parasites in a wild population of jaguar in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.
The results of the first investigation of intestinal parasites in one of the last remaining populations of jaguars in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest stress the need to properly understand the dynamics of disease in this wild population and to evaluate the risk of contracting new diseases from domestic species inhabiting the neighboring areas. Expand
People and big cats (Panthera onca and Puma concolor) of the Atlantic Forest, Brazil
Conservation of large felids is not only about collecting ecological information; it is also about understanding people’s values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. The overarching goal of this thesisExpand
Capybaras (Rodentia: Cavidae) in highlands: environmental variables related to distribution, and herbivory effects on a common plant species
The results show that capybaras frequently occur in the high-altitude grasslands along the Campo Belo River, but they avoid waterlogged areas, suggesting that in highlands the species may present different environmental preferences from those presented in lowlands. Expand

Jaguar Panthera onca population decline in the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest of Argentina and Brazil
Abstract The Green Corridor of Argentina and Brazil is the largest forest remnant of the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest. The jaguar population of this region is highly fragmented and reduced. To assessExpand
Effects of hunting in habitat fragments of the Atlantic forests, Brazil.
This study evaluates the impact of hunting on mammalian and avian species in Atlantic forest fragments of the Mata de Planalto in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Colonists who farm on the edge ofExpand
Loss of historical range of jaguars in southern Brazil
Records of the last individuals shot reveal that the jaguar has suffered a loss of historical range at an estimated rate of one latitudinal degree every 10 years in its southern range in the Atlantic Rain Forest of Brazil. Expand
The Brazilian Atlantic Forest: How much is left, and how is the remaining forest distributed? Implications for conservation
The neotropical Atlantic Forest supports one of the highest degrees of species richness and rates of endemism on the planet, but has also undergone a huge forest loss. However, there exists noExpand
Decline of peccaries in a protected subtropical forest of Brazil: toward conservation issues
It is suggested that efforts to minimize the intensity of vehicle traffic and illegal hunting should be implemented if remaining collared peccaries are to survive in INP. Expand

Data was suggestive of the probable local extinction of Tayassu pecari(Link, 1795) in the Park, which is strongly associated with the conservation of the "Misiones Green Corridor", which probably represents a source area for many species. Expand
