Abstract There is a powerful association between antisocial behavior and substance abuse. What is still uncertain is whether the association between the two is causal, so that one disorder leads to the other, or is explained by shared symptoms or shared risk factors, or suggests that the two disorders are not distinct, but are actually variants of the same underlying disorder. Each of these hypotheses is shown to be plausible. The paper considers four criteria for causality: precedence… Expand

TLDR
Despite the large amount of research into antisocial personality disorder, longitudinal data are missing and the validity of the diagnosis remains questionable, the paper concludes with recommendations for future research. Expand
Test of the plausibility of adolescent substance use playing a causal role in developing adulthood antisocial behavior.
DSM-IV antisocial personality disorder diagnosis requires that conduct disorder be exhibited before age 15. However, recent studies have reported on men and women without conduct disorder before ageExpand
The influence of traits of disinhibition on the association between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior.
TLDR
The relationship between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior is best characterized by a common association with excitement seeking, and both excitement seeking and social deviance proneness were found to be significantly associated with alcohol use. Expand
Spouse similarity for antisocial behaviour in the general population
TLDR
The finding of a strong similarity between spouses for AAB has significant implications for both clinicians and researchers and suggests that adult antisocial behaviour should be considered as a distinct diagnostic entity, an approach which diverges from DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. Expand
Neurological soft signs in homicidal men with antisocial personality disorder
TLDR
The NSS scores of antisocial offenders were significantly increased compared with those of the healthy controls, whereas no significant differences were observed between the scores of offenders and those of patients with schizophrenia. Expand
Pharmacological interventions for antisocial personality disorder.
TLDR
The benefits and adverse effects of pharmacological interventions for adults with AsPD are assessed and the certainty of evidence for each outcome in this review is rated as very low, meaning that the effect estimates reported are very little confidence. Expand
Sleep architecture in homicidal women with antisocial personality disorder—a preliminary study
TLDR
The most striking finding was the increased amount of slow wave sleep, particularly the deepest sleep stage, S4, in women with ASP, which is in agreement with previously reported results in habitually violent male criminals with ASP. Expand
ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIORAL SYNDROMES AND RETURN TO DRUG USE FOLLOWING RESIDENTIAL RELAPSE PREVENTION/HEALTH EDUCATION TREATMENT
TLDR
The results add to the evidence suggesting that the DSM requirement for childhood onset in ASPD may be clinically important among substance abusers in identifying a severely antisocial and chronically addicted group at elevated risk for early posttreatment recidivism. Expand
Quantitative electroencephalographic measures in homicidal men with antisocial personality disorder
TLDR
Quantitative analyses of the electroencephalographic activity of drug-free and detoxified homicidal male offenders with antisocial personality disorder as the primary diagnosis provide further support to the growing evidence of brain dysfunction in severe aggressive behavior. Expand
Psychological interventions for antisocial personality disorder.
TLDR
This review includes 19 studies, comparing a psychological intervention against TAU (also called 'standard Maintenance' in some studies), and found evidence that, compared to SM alone, CM + SM may improve social functioning measured by family/social scores on the Addiction Severity Index, for outpatients at 12 months post-intervention. Psychosocial correlates of marijuana use and problem drinking in a national sample of adolescents.
