Community detection and hierarchy extraction are usually thought of as separate inference tasks on networks. Considering only one of the two when studying real-world data can be an oversimplifi-cation. In this work, we present a generative model based on an interplay between community and hierarchical structures. It assumes that each node has a preference in the interaction mechanism and nodes with the same preference are more likely to interact, while heterogeneous interactions are still…

Figures from this paper

Ordered community detection in directed networks
TLDR
A nonparametric Bayesian approach based on a modification of the stochastic block model that can take advantage of rank alignment and coherence to produce parsimonious descriptions of networks that combine ordered hierarchies with arbitrary mixing patterns between groups.

Reciprocity, community detection, and link prediction in dynamic networks
TLDR
A probabilistic generative model with hidden variables that integrates reciprocity and communities as structural information of networks that evolve in time that captures the reciprocity of real networks better than standard models with only community structure, while performing well at link prediction tasks.
Community detection and reciprocity in networks by jointly modeling pairs of edges
TLDR
A probabilistic generative model and an efficient algorithm to both perform community detection and capture reciprocity in networks that overcomes the limitations of both standard algorithms and recent models that incorporate reciprocity through a pseudo-likelihood approximation are presented.
Social Feedback and the Emergence of Rank in Animal Society
TLDR
A new theory is presented, of a feedback loop between knowledge of rank and consequent behavior, that explains the transition to strategic aggression and the formation and persistence of dominance hierarchies in groups capable of both social memory and inference.
The PageRank Citation Ranking : Bringing Order to the Web
TLDR
This paper describes PageRank, a mathod for rating Web pages objectively and mechanically, effectively measuring the human interest and attention devoted to them, and shows how to efficiently compute PageRank for large numbers of pages.
Advanced mean field methods: theory and practice
TLDR
The theoretical foundations of advanced mean field methods are covered, the relation between the different approaches are explored, the quality of the approximation obtained is examined, and their application to various areas of probabilistic modeling is demonstrated.
Reciprocity
TLDR
It is high time that the reciprocity bubble should be pricked, for already foreigners in England possess greater status in the practice of their profession than Englishmen do in most foreign countries.
