Shigella, the etiological agent of bacillary dysentery, rapidly kills human monocyte-derived macrophages in vitro. Wild-type Shigella flexneri, but not a nonvirulent derivative, induced human macrophage apoptosis as determined by morphology and terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL).
