In this paper we continue the investigation initiated by Weymann as to the reason why the spectrum of the residual radiation deviates from a Planck curve. We shall consider the distortions of the spectrum resulting from radiation during the recombination of a primeval plasma. Analytical expressions are obtained for the deviation from an equilibrium spectrum due to Compton scattering by hot electrons. On the basis of the observational data it is concluded that a period of neutral hydrogen in the… Expand

The Thermal History of the Universe and the Spectrum of Relic Radiation
Many of the cosmological models currently under discussion and theories of the origin of galaxies which involve antimatter, strong turbulence and so on result in significant energy release during theExpand

The evolution of CMB spectral distortions in the early Universe
• Physics
• 2011
The energy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) allows us to constrain episodes of energy release in the early Universe. In this paper, we revisit and refine computations of theExpand
The spectrum of the microwave background as a probe of the early universe
Abstract This paper gives a general overview of how a broad variety of thermal histories of the universe can lead to distortions of the microwave background spectrum and discusses the constraints setExpand
The y-sky: diffuse spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background
• Physics
• 2010
The non-linear evolution of the energy density of the radiation induces spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background both at recombination and during the reionization era. This distortionExpand

It is shown that the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect can be used as a powerful tool to probe the electron distribution in clusters of galaxies and discriminate among these different interpretations of the X-ray excess. Expand
Distortion of CMB spectrum due to dark matter annihilation
The monopole signal of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a probe to the early Universe. The energy spectrum of the CMB holds the information of energy release episodes from redshift of about zExpand
