A good many papers have been published in recent years leading to the conclusion that mammalian tissues can be viewed as composed of separate phases, corresponding approximately to cells and intercellular spaces, which differ in their inorganic composition. The technique has been to analyse the tissue as a whole and, by comparison with serum analyses, to calculate the space occupied by the cells and their constitution.
