SUMMARY: Abortion of oogonia of Phytophthora cactorum grown on media containing cholestanol occurs at or just before early meiotic prophase. Meiosis is possibly controlled by a steroid hormone, for which cholesterol is an effective precursor but cholestanol is not.

Sterol Requirement of Mating Strains of Heterothallic Phytophthoras
TLDR
Production of the inducing α2 hormone by the A2 strain does not appear to require sterol, but sterol greatly enhances the response to the inducing hormone byThe A1 strain as well as being required for subsequent oospore development.
Sterol Requirement of Mating Strains of Heterothallic Phytophthoras
TLDR
Production of the inducing a 2 hormone by the A2 strain does not appear to require sterol, but sterol greatly enhances the response to the inducing hormone byThe A1 strain as well as being required for subsequent oospore development.
Oogonia with multiple oospheres in Phytophthora infestans
Isolates of Phytophthora infestans of A1 mating type from central Mexico and Wales, when mated to a range of A2 isolates from Russian and Mexico, produced a proportion of abnormal oogonia with
Disassociation of oogonia formation from oospore production inPhytophthora cactorum by sterols with varying side chain lengths
A series of 20(R)-n-alkylpregn-5-en-3β-ols with 0 to 9 (but not with 12) C-atoms in the alkyl group induced formation of oogonia inPhytophthora cactorum. However, maturation of the oogonia into
Differential metabolism of cholesterol and sitosterol byPhytophthora cactorum
When cultures ofPhytophthora cactorum grown on sterol-free medium were supplemented with a mixture of cholesterol and sitosterol, the sitosterol was initially taken up more rapidly than the
STEROIDAL OESTROGENS AND PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
TLDR
The current information regarding the occurrence of steroidal oestrogens and the physiological significance of these compounds in plants is reviewed and results are presented from experiments with Pisum and Phaseolus seedlings.
Effect of 6-substituted sterols on sterol-induced reproduction inPhytophthora cactorum
TLDR
The results indicate the importance of C-6 as a point of interaction with cellular sites controlling oospore formation in Phytophthoras or Pythiums examined hitherto in forming numberous oospores with cholestanol.
Sexual reproduction in the Peronosporomycetes (chromistan fungi)
TLDR
The cellular reorganization occurring in the oogonium and oospores, particularly in relation to the possible functions of the dense body vesicle system and the glucan, phosphate, and lipid oospore reserves, may be critical for the internal morphology of the mature Oospore and its function.

Sterols and the Production of Oospores by Phytophthora cactorum
SUMMARY: The effect of eight sterols on oospore production by Phytophthora cactorum has been studied quantitatively. Their activity was found to be in the following order: β-sitosterol =
Studies on the Biosynthesis of Antheridiol
TLDR
Labelling and trapping studies with a series of hypothetic sterol precursors have indicated the biological sequence involved in elaboration of the antheridiol side chain in the aquatic fungus Achlya bisexualis.
Competition and synergism between cholesterol and cholestanol in oospore formation in Phytophthora cactorum.
SUMMARY: Cholesterol promoted oospore formation in Phytophthora cactorum; very few oospores were formed when cholestanol was incorporated in the medium instead. Above a critical concentration of
The sterol requirement of Phytophthora cactorum.
TLDR
Several sterols and related substances were tested for ability to promote sexual reproduction in Phytophthora cactorum and the most active substances tested were 29-isofucosterol and β-sitosterol.
Genetical evidence for diploidy in Phytophthora
A spontaneous mutant of Phytophthora drechsleri , resistant to p -fluorophenyl-alanine and two induced mutants resistant to chloramphenicol have been selected and analysed. The pattern of inheritance
Diploidy and Chromosomal Structural Hybridity in Phytophthora infestans
TLDR
Evidence is accumulating to support the view that the Oomycetes resemble higher organisms in being diploid in the vegetative state with meiosis occurring prior to gamete formation, but there is still little cytological information available for many important fungi in this group.
Meiosis in the Oogonium and Antheridium of Pythium debaryanum Hesse
ACETO-ORCEIN squash preparations of a culture of Pythium debaryanum Hesse were found to have nuclei in division in the oogonia and the antheridia (Figs. 1 and 2). The stage of division was usually
The inheritance of drug resistance and compatibility type in Phytophthora drechsleri
TLDR
Methods have been developed for the selection of mutants resistant to p-fluorophenylalanine, chloramphenicol and actidione and inheritance of mating type was anomalous in crosses involving drug-resistant mutants.
Meiosis in Diploid and Polyploid Sex Organs of Phytophthora and Achlya
TLDR
Cytological observations on Phytophthora cactorum, P. erythroseptica and an Achlya species indicate that these organisms are diploid with meiosis occurring in the sex organs just before gamete formation, with critical cytological evidence that the divisions in the gametangia are meiotic divisions.
