ETHIONINE (α-amino-γ-ethylmercapto-butyric acid), a presumed antagonist of methionine, had previously been shown to induce a fatty infiltration of the liver in fasted female rats (Farber, Simpson and Tarver, 1950). Methionine prevented the rise in liver lipids and protected the animals against death while other amino acids, as well as choline, inositol and dimethylthetin were ineffective.
