All metazoans protect themselves from invasion of microorganisms, parasites, viruses and even cells from individuals of the same species. In all phyla, precise mechanisms of recognition allow for discrimination between self and non-self avoiding the danger of contamination. In that sense, all metazoans have an ‘immune system’.
