The 20th century saw a rise in the use of deodorants and antiperspirants to combat the negative effects of perspiration. The aged residue of deodorants, antiperspirants, and perspiration causes stiffening and discolouration in the underarm areas of garments and degrades certain fibres. With the wide use of deodorants and antiperspirants in the 20th century, the consequences may be severe for garments with these residues within a museum's costume collection.
