A descriptive and interpretive discourse analysis of Australian policy concerning international students is provided by way of the formulation of a model of the international student policy trajectory through Gayatri Spivak's strategy of historiography and the notion of 'reading against the grain'. Analysis concluded that the presence of international students brings the positive diversity, cultural awareness and long-term friendships between local and international students.
