The conservation value of the world’s tropical savannahs has been increasingly recognized, owing to their rich and abundant flora and fauna, and high levels of species endemism1,2. These dynamic systems of grassland and open woodland cover 15 million to 24.6 million km2 of South America, Africa and Asia2.
