The heme oxygenase/biliverdin reductase (HO/BVR) axis catalyzes the degradation of heme, but this system and its by-products, carbon monoxide (CO) and bilirubin, have also been shown to exert cytoprotective effects by activating pro-survival pathways and scavenging free radicals.
