A theoretical basis for the integration method of predicting the strength of insulation subjected to impulses of nonstandard wave shapes is presented. Two theoretical approaches are developed for a general physical model of impulse breakdown applicable to gaseous, liquid, and solid insulation, and from an energy-balance model applied to an incipient breakdown channel in a general dielectric.
