We give an elementary review of black holes in string theory. We discuss BPS holes, the microscopic computation of entropy and the 'fuzzball' picture of the black hole interior suggested by microstates of the 2‐charge system.
The quantum structure of black holes
We give an elementary review of black holes in string theory. We discuss black hole entropy from string microstates and Hawking radiation from these states. We then review the structure of two-charge
Counting Black Hole Microstates in String Theory
In this project, we explore the area of black holes in String Theory. String Theory has had several successes in describing properties of black holes. Recent progress in String Theory points toward
Evaporating black-to-white hole
We construct and discuss the form of the (effective) spacetime geometry inside a black hole undergoing a quantum transition to a white hole, taking into account the back-reaction of the component of
Effective Conformal Descriptions of Black Hole Entropy: A Review
Black holes behave as thermodynamic objects, and it is natural to ask for an underlying "statistical mechanical" explanation in terms of microscopic degrees of freedom. I summarize attempts to
Black Hole Solutions
The chapter reviews the definition of black hole, the black hole solutions in general relativity, the no-hair theorem, some simple gravitational collapse models, and the Penrose diagrams of black
Microstate Geometries and Entropy Enhancement
In string theory, black-hole backgrounds are far from unique and there are large families of completely smooth, horizonless geometries with the same structure as a black hole from infinity down to
Quantum Field Theory, Black Holes and Holography
These notes are an expanded version of lectures given at the Croatian School on Black Holes at Trpanj, June 21-25, 2010. The aim is to provide a practical introduction to quantum field theory in
Black holes in supergravity: flow equations and duality
We review the physics of extremal black holes in supergravity theories, emphasizing the role of the first order formalism underlying single-centre solutions, the attractor mechanism and describing
Summary of session D1: quantum aspects of black holes
The talks presented in the parallel session on quantum aspects of black holes at the 18th conference on general relativity and gravitation in Sydney, Australia are summarized below.
Quantum black holes
Living in a middle ground between the light fundamental entities of particle physics and the massive black holes of astrophysics are objects that trap light but don’t obey classical rules.
