The battle against onchocerciasis in Africa has been led by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP, 1974–2002) and the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC). Both programmes aim to eliminate onchocerciasis as a disease of publichealth importance and as an obstacle to socioeconomic development.
