We take advantage of the largest high-resolution simulation of cosmic structure growth ever carried out - the Millennium Simulation of the concordancecold dark matter (CDM) cosmogony - to study how the star formation histories, ages and metallicities of elliptical galaxies depend on environment and on stellar mass. We concentrate on a galaxy formation model which is tuned to fit the joint luminosity/colour/morphology distribution of low-redshift galaxies. Massive ellipticals in this model have…
Galaxy growth in the concordance ΛCDM cosmology
We use galaxy and dark halo data from the public database for the Millennium Simulation to study the growth of galaxies in the De Lucia et al. model for galaxy formation. Previous work has shown this
Timing the formation and assembly of early-type galaxies via spatially resolved stellar populations analysis
To investigate star formation and assembly processes of massive galaxies, we present here a spatially-resolved stellar populations analysis of a sample of 45 elliptical galaxies (Es) selected from
Properties of long gamma-ray burst host galaxies in cosmological simulations
We use galaxy catalogues constructed by combining high-resolution N-body simulations with semi-analytic models of galaxy formation to study the properties of long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host
The effect of metal enrichment and galactic winds on galaxy formation in cosmological zoom simulations
We investigate the differential effects of metal cooling and galactic stellar winds on the cosmological formation of individual galaxies with three sets of cosmological, hydrodynamical zoom
A Study of Binary Stellar Population Synthesis of Elliptical Galaxies
We determined the relative stellar ages and metallicities of about 80 elliptical galaxies in both low and high density environments using the latest binary stellar population (BSP) Synthesis model
Galactic star formation and accretion histories from matching galaxies to dark matter haloes
We present a new statistical method to determine the relationship between the stellar masses of galaxies and the masses of their host dark matter haloes over the entire cosmic history from z 4 to
The high‐redshift galaxy population in hierarchical galaxy formation models
We compare observations of the high-redshift galaxy population to the predictions of the galaxy formation model of Croton et al. and De Lucia & Blaizot. This model, implemented on the Millennium
emerge – empirical constraints on the formation of passive galaxies
We present constraints on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) with the empirical model EMERGE. The parameters of this model are adjusted so that it reproduces the evolution of
The role of dry mergers for the formation and evolution of brightest cluster galaxies
Using a resimulation technique, we perform high-resolution cosmological simulations of dry mergers in a massive (1015 M☉) galaxy cluster identified in the Millennium Run. Our initial conditions
Breaking the hierarchy of galaxy formation
Recent observations of the distant Universe suggest that much of the stellar mass of bright galaxies was already in place at z > 1. This presents a challenge for models of galaxy formation because

A catalogue and analysis of local galaxy ages and metallicities
We have assembled a catalogue of relative ages, metallicities and abundance ratios for about 150 local galaxies in field, group and cluster environments. The galaxies span morphological types from cD
The Many lives of AGN: Cooling flows, black holes and the luminosities and colours of galaxies
We simulate the growth of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes by implementing a suite of semi-analytic models on the output of the Millennium Run, a very large simulation of the
Clustering of galaxies in a hierarchical universe - I. Methods and results at z=0
We introduce a new technique for following the formation and evolution of galaxies in cosmological N-body simulations. Dissipationless simulations are used to track the formation and merging of dark
The nature of high-redshift galaxies
Abstract Using semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, we investigate the properties of z∼3 galaxies and compare them with the observed population of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). In addition to the
Populating a cluster of galaxies - I. Results at z=0
ABSTRA C T We simulate the assembly of a massive rich cluster and the formation of its constituent galaxies in a flat, low-density universe. Our most accurate model follows the collapse, the star
The Observed properties of high redshift cluster galaxies
We use the semi-analytic models of galaxy formation developed by Kauffmann, White \& Guiderdoni to generate predictions for the observed properties of cluster and group galaxies at redshifts between
Chemical enrichment and the origin of the colour-magnitude relation of elliptical galaxies in a hierarchical merger model
In this paper, we present a model of the formation and chemical enrichment of elliptical galaxies that differs from the conventional picture in two fundamental ways. (i) Ellipticals do not
The spatial and kinematic distributions of cluster galaxies in a ΩCDM universe: comparison with observations
We combine dissipationless N-body simulations and semi-analytic models of galaxy formation to study the spatial and kinematic distributions of cluster galaxies in a ΛCDM cosmology. We investigate how
Simulations of the formation, evolution and clustering of galaxies and quasars
It is shown that baryon-induced features in the initial conditions of the Universe are reflected in distorted form in the low-redshift galaxy distribution, an effect that can be used to constrain the nature of dark energy with future generations of observational surveys of galaxies.
The many lives of active galactic nuclei: cooling flows, black holes and the luminosities and colour
We simulate the growth of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes by implementing a suite of semi-analytic models on the output of the Millennium Run, a very large simulation of the
