The anaerobic acetogenic bacterium Acetobacterium woodii has a novel Na(+)-translocating electron transport chain that couples electron transfer from reduced ferredoxin to NAD(+) with the generation of a primary electrochemical Na(+) potential across its cytoplasmic membrane.
