Twenty stations were sampled monthly during the ice free period (June-September) in 1972. Emergence traps, emptied daily, were also employed. The major macroinvertebrates in the exposed zone were Ephemeroptera, Gammarus lacustris, Trichoptera, Chironomidae, Plecoptera and Coleoptera, and these constituted over 90% of total numbers. Densities of G. lacustris, Ephemeroptera, Tipulidae and Plecoptera showed a positive correlation with detritus. No significant relationship was found for the other… Expand

Figures from this paper

The Ephemeroptera of Øvre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
All species were univoltine, but differences in ability to grow during ice cover and in life cycle timing resulted in a succession in emergence during the ice free period. Expand
The Chironomidae of the exposed zone of Øvre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
The species composition and relative abundance of the four main groups of Chironomidac indicate that Ovre Heimdalsvatn is a subarctic lake, with a strong oligotrophic character. Expand
The Plecoptera of Øvre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
During the winter N avicularis occurred in large numbers on soft bottom at nearly all depths while D. bicaudata was only recorded on stony substratum in shallow water and was therefore more susceptible to predation and was recorded in trout stomachs during most of the year. Expand
The aquatic Coleoptera of Øvre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
The species composition, seasonal and spatial distribution, and biomass of the coleopteran Fauna of the exposed zone of Ovre Heimdalsvatn in 1972 are presented and P. maculatus, on account of its higher individual weight, was the major contributor to the coelopteran biomass. Expand
Aquatic insects of the Bohemian Forest glacial lakes:Diversity, long-term changes, and influence of acidification
TLDR
A certain degree of recovery has been documented by the increase in species richness of Ephemeroptera and Heteroptera, yet the lakes have not been colonised by any acid-sensitive species. Expand
The Trichoptera of Øvre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
Trichopteran larvae were sampled on soft substrata at all depths, on stony substrata in the exposed zone, and the adults in emergence traps, placed along the lake shore, where the two most numerous species showed different habit preferences. Expand
Long-term changes in the littoral benthos of a Norwegian subalpine lake following the introduction of the European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus)
TLDR
The introduction of the alien species, the European minnow, into Øvre Heimdalsvatn has clearly changed the composition and structure of the littoral macroinvertebrate benthos. Expand
The distribution, life cycle and production of Leptophlebia vespertina (L.) (Ephemeroptera) in a lowland lake

Oak Mere, the water body studied, is a moderately productive base-poor lowland lake. It has zones of submerged marginal vegetation growing on sand at the south-west end and on peat at the north-eastExpand
Emergence of chironomidae from Findley Lake in the coniferous forest of the cascade mountains after early and late thaws
AbstractChironomidae were collected in floating emergence traps on 27.5 m deep Findley Lake in the coniferous forest of the Cascade Mountains, USA, from 1972 to 1975. There was considerable yearlyExpand
Spatial Distribution and Diversity of Macroinvertebrates on the Stony Shore of a Subarctic Lake
TLDR
Quantitative samples taken with a new colonisation sampler over three years demonstrated a macroinvertebrate community of 25 taxa in the stony littoral of Takvatn, North Norway, lower than in southern oligotrophic Fennoscandian lakes but higher than in northern Swedish lakes. Expand

The invertebrate fauna of the streams in Øvre Heimdalen
TLDR
The lotic communities in Ovre Heimdalen were completely dominated by insects, and the species distribution of stoneflies, mayflies, and caddisflies was clearly related to the deciduous vegetation along the streams. Expand
A Study of the Population of Insects Emerging as Adults from the Dundas Marsh, Hamil- ton, Ontario, During 1948'
TLDR
In 1946 a few species of insects were collected about the marsh and in 1947 a project was undertaken to determine the times of first and last emergence and the periocd of maximum emergence of various species which emetge as adults from the water. Expand
The occurrence of benthos deep in the substratum of a stream
Summary 1 The vertical distribution of the benthic fauna of the Speed River, Ontario, was studied over a 13-month period from October 1970 to October 1971. Various physical and chemicalExpand
The Invertebrate Fauna
The invertebrate community of lotic ecosystems is, with some specific exceptions, a remarkably conservative assemblage of types that recur in similar biotopes regardless of geographical location.Expand
A survey of stream invertebrates in the Cow Green basin (Upper Teesdale) before inundation
TLDR
Habitat diversity and chemical richness appear to be the most likely reasons for the relatively large number of species found in the reservoir basin and in the Tees downstream of the dam, before and after impoundment. Expand
The vertebrates of the Øvre Heimdalen valley
The small mammals of the Ovre Heimdalen valley were assessed by snap-trapping. Birds were surveyed in the shore zone of the lake. Numbers of domestic animals were collected from existing sources.Expand
The energy budget of the brown trout population of ovre Heimdalsvatn
TLDR
The specific energy value of trout increased with increasing weight of the fish, and an energy decrease of almost 50% was demonstrated for the spawning trout of both sexes, and the calorific values prior to spawning were not reached before the next summer. Expand
Evaluation of a kicking technique for sampling stream bottom fauna
A square-framed, conical net (300-μ pores) was used in the kicking technique described herein for sampling the larger invertebrates of stony streams. Small samples have consistent percentageExpand
