Mammalian optic nerve axons are organised within a fascicular framework. This pattern changes between the eye and the chiasm. For most of the length of the nerve fascicular patterns are apparent, but close to the chiasm, in a region of major fibre rearrangement, the fascicular configuration is lost. It is not known how this change occurs, or whether there are less obvious systematic changes in the number of fascicles or their geometry along the length of the nerve.
