Although the swastika is most commonly associated with Nazi Germany, the symbol has a long history. Believed to have originated in India, the swastika had a multiplicity of meanings and was used as a symbol across the globe. Only with the concentrated efforts of nineteenth century racial scientists did the swastika come to represent that mythical Aryan race.
