Tungsten carbide (WC) thermal spray coatings applied hy the high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process are considered the leading candidates for replacement of hard chrome plating. This article describes the decision-making process followed to establish the acceptability of WC thermal spray coatings for aircraft landing gear applications. Descriptions of both the laboratory testing phase and the in-service evaluation phase are given.
Wear characteristics of electrolytic hard chrome and thermal sprayed WC–10 Co–4 Cr coatings sliding against Al–Ni–bronze in air at 21 °C and at −40 °C
Abstract Hexavalent chromium is carcinogenic and the disposing of solutions for electroplating chromium can create serious health and environmental hazards. Alternative methods of depositing otherExpand
HVOF-Deposited WCCoCr as Replacement for Hard Cr in Landing Gear Actuators
WCCoCr coatings deposited by HVOF can replace hard Cr on landing gear components. Powders with two different WC particle sizes (micro and nano-) and geometries have been employed to study the effectsExpand
Tribological Requirements of Thermally Sprayed Coatings for Wear Resistant Applications
During the last decades, improved understanding of tribological behavior of different material combinations led also to an intensified development of thermal spray applications. In the field of e.g.Expand
In this study, WC-Co and Cr3C2-NiCr coatings were deposited on H-13 hot forging steels by Detonation Gun- spray process and analysed with regard to their performance under abrasive wear conditions.Expand
Comparison of high temperature wear behaviour of plasma sprayed WC–Co coated and hard chromium plated AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel
Abstract The wear behaviour of plasma sprayed coating and hard chrome plating on AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel substrate is experimentally investigated in unlubricated conditions. ExperimentsExpand
Surface modification of HVOF thermal sprayed WC–CoCr coatings by laser treatment
In this work the affects of laser characteristics on microstructure and microhardness of high velocity oxygen fuel sprayed (HVOF) WC–CoCr coatings were investigated. The coating was deposited with aExpand
A comparative research on corrosion behavior of a standard, crack-free and duplex hard chromium coatings
Abstract In this study, the single and duplex layers of standard and crack-free hard chromium coatings were prepared by using direct current (DC) and pulse current (PC) electroplating processes onExpand
Microstructural study of the initiation and formation of immersion tin coating on copper
The initiation and growth of immersion tin coating from hydrochloric acid based and methanesulphonic acid based baths on the inner surface of copper tube was studied by transmission electronExpand
