To investigate the etiology of pleural effusions in our region, we undertook a prospective study of patients with this condition in our centers. During a 5-year period, we studied 642 pleural effusion patients aged 57.1 +/- 21.1 years, of whom 401 were men aged 56.5 +/- 21 years and 241 were women aged 57.8 +/- 21.4 years; the male/female ratio was 1.6:1. The most frequent cause of pleural effusion was tuberculosis (25%), followed by neoplasia (22.9%) and congestive heart failure (17.9%). The…
Etiology of exudative pleural effusions in adults in North Lebanon.
TLDR
In North Lebanon, the clinical pattern and etiology of exudative pleural effusions are similar to those in the developing countries; the most frequent cause of pleural exudates is tuberculosis, followed by malignancy, particularly malignancies due to lung cancer.
Causes of non-purulent pleural effusions in a region with high prevalence of tuberculosis and HIV infections
TLDR
This study shows that pneumonia and tuberculosis are the two most common causes of non purulent pleural effusion in the region.

TLDR
Histological examination and culture of pleural biopsy were the most useful diagnostic workup for tuberculosis effusions, whereas repeated cytological examination of Pleural fluid and pleuralBiopsy were most useful for malignant effusions.
Etiology of Pleural Effusions in Cancer Patients
TLDR
Overall, MPE was the most common cause of PE in cancer patients, however the etiology of PE was significantly different according to primary tumor origin and subtypes of lung cancer.
Tuberculous pleurisy: a study of 254 patients.
TLDR
In these patients, lymphocyte-rich exudative pleural effusions occurred, on average, at a young age, with no preference for either the right or the left side; normally affected no more than two thirds of the hemithorax; and were generally unaccompanied by pulmonary infiltrates.
Tuberculous pleural effusion in children.
TLDR
Parenchymal consolidation is the most common associated radiographic finding, and pleural effusion accounts for 22.1% of cases of pediatric pulmonary tuberculosis.
Management of malignant pleural effusions.
TLDR
Post mortem studies suggest that most pleural metastases arise from tumour emboli to the visceral pleural surface, with secondary seeding to the parietal pleura 1, 20, and other possible mechanisms include direct tumour invasion (in lung cancers, chest wall neoplasms, and breast carcinoma), haematogenous spread to parietal Pleura, and lymphatic involvement.
Massive Pleural Fluid Collection in Adult Nigerians
TLDR
The presentation of patients with nontraumatic haemorrhagic or straw-coloured MPE narrows the diagnosis to PTB and malignancy with MPE cases being a marker for short survival rate.

The incidence of pleural effusion in a well-defined region. Epidemiologic study in central Bohemia.
TLDR
It is concluded that pleural effusions are relatively common and if these figures are extrapolated to the United States and Czechoslovakia respectively, one could expect at least 800,000 cases in theUnited States and 48,000 in Czechoslov Slovakia annually.
Value of adenosine deaminase in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions in young patients in a region of high prevalence of tuberculosis.
TLDR
In a region with a high prevalence of tuberculosis procedures not involving pleural biopsy have a very high diagnostic yield in patients with a pleural effusion aged < or = 35 years, making biopsy necessary only in cases in which pleural levels of ADA are below 47 U/l.
Pleural effusion: laboratory tests in 300 cases.
TLDR
The cause of pleural effusion was studied in 300 consecutive patients by clinical examination and laboratory tests and the various causes and the usefulness of the different investigative procedures are discussed.
Pleural effusion. A diagnostic dilemma.
TLDR
The algorithm provides a logical, cost-effective approach to the diagnostic problem of pleural effusion and recommends that only measurement of protein content and cytologic examination be ordered routinely.

TLDR
Light et al 2 have shown that in a select group of patients, transudates and exudates can be separated in the laboratory by measuring the protein and lactate dehydrogenase.

TLDR
Pleuroperitoneal shunt or chronic indwelling catheter should be considered for patients who fail pleurodesis or who have a trapped lung, and pH should not be the sole criterion for recommending or withholding pleurodenis.
Cholesterol: a useful parameter for distinguishing between pleural exudates and transudates.
TLDR
It is concluded that determination of PCHOL and P/SCHOL is of great value for distinguishing between pleural exudates and transudates, and should be included in routine laboratory analysis of pleural effusions.
Diagnostic value of simultaneous determination of pleural adenosine deaminase and pleural lysozyme/serum lysozyme ratio in pleural effusions.
TLDR
The tuberculous pleural effusion cases were differentiated from the nontuberculous with a sensibility, positive predictivevalue, negative predictive value, and safety diagnosis of 100 percent and it has been proven that there is a good correlation between ADAp and Lp/Ls ratio.
Diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy using the biologic parameters adenosine deaminase, lysozyme, and interferon gamma.
TLDR
It is concluded that PADA and IFN are useful parameters for early diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy, and that the other parameters considered have no advantages over PADA or IFN for this purpose (though the high specificity of P/SLYS may be noted).
