A multi-disciplinary study has been carried out on a Late Neogene succession exposed in the SE portion of the Valdelsa Basin (Strolla Creek, Central Italy). The succession consists of upper Tortonian-Messinian sediments, unconformably overlain by uppermost Messinian-Pliocene deposits, accumulated in alluvial, lacustrine and marine environments. Previous studies on this succession hypothesized a sudden marine flooding of the upper Messinian Lago-Mare realm in the earliest Zanclean in apparent… Expand
Hinterland basin development and infilling through tectonic and eustatic processes: latest Messinian‐Gelasian Valdelsa Basin, Northern Apennines, Italy
This article reports a stratigraphic and structural analysis of the Neogene-Quaternary Valdelsa Basin (Central Italy), filled with up to 1000 m of uppermost Miocene to lower Pleistocene strata. TheExpand
Messinian-earliest Zanclean tectonic-depositional dynamics of the Cinigiano-Baccinello and Velona basins (Tuscany, Italy)
The paper reports a revision of the tectonic-depositional evolution of the continental Cinigiano-Baccinello and Velona basins, located in the Amiata Volcano region, with special emphasis on theExpand
A comprehensive review of the MSC facies and their origins in the offshore Sirt Basin, Libya
Interpretation of 2D long-offset multi-client seismic data acquired by CGGVeritas in 2004–5 has allowed the distribution and composition of the Messinian salinity crisis (MSC) facies to be mappedExpand
Geopalaeontological setting, chronology and palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Baccinello-Cinigiano Basin continental successions (Late Miocene, Italy)
Abstract The Latest Miocene succession of the Baccinello-Cinigiano Basin in southern Tuscany (Italy) recorded a faunal turnover documenting the extinction of an older, insular, endemic faunal complexExpand
An outline of the geology of the Northern Apennines (Italy), with geological map at 1:250,000 scale
An outline of the geology of the Italian Northern Apennines, to accompany a geological map at 1:250,000 scale covering the Emilia- Romagna, Marche, Tuscany and Umbria regions, is presented herein.Expand
Magnetostratigraphy of the Late Miocene Baccinello–Cinigiano basin (Tuscany, Italy) and the age of Oreopithecus bambolii faunal assemblages
Abstract This study has the aim of dating the latest Miocene Hominoid Oreopithecus bambolii bearing succession of the Baccinello–Cinigiano Basin (BCB) in southern Tuscany (Italy). Since the 1960sExpand
The Proposed Geosite of Volano Landslide and a Geomorphological Itinerary Within the Valdelsa Basin (Montespertoli, Tuscany, Italy)
The town of Montespertoli (Florence, Italy) is located in the Valdelsa basin, on a NW-SE-oriented ridge, which reaches the maximum altitude of 260 m a.s.l. The inhabited centre develops onExpand
Late Neogene and Quaternary lagomorphs from Tuscany: a revision based on specimens in Basel Naturhistorisches Museum and Florence University collections
A revision of the Late Turolian (Messinian)- Biharian (Early Pleistocene) lagomorphs from Tuscany kept in the collections of the Basel Naturhistorisches Museum is the basis for increasing ourExpand
Late Neogene and Quaternary lagomorphs from Tuscany: a revision based on specimens in Basel Naturhistorisches Museum and Florence University collections

Suidae Transition at the Miocene-Pliocene Boundary: a Reassessment of the Taxonomy and Chronology of Propotamochoerus provincialis
The Miocene-Pliocene (Turolian-Ruscinian) transition represents a fundamental interval in the evolution of Euro-Mediterranean paleocommunities. In fact, the paleoenvironmental changes connected withExpand

Thrust-top lacustrine-lagoonal basin development in accretionary wedges: late Messinian (Lago-Mare) episode in the central Apennines (Italy)
Abstract We analysed in detail the geometry, sedimentology and palaeontology (both mollusc and ostracod assemblages) of a small lacustrine–lagoonal basin located at about 1100 m a.s.l. in the MarsicaExpand
THE PLIOCENE DEPOSITS IN THE CENTRAL-EASTERN VALDELSA BASIN (FLORENCE, ITALY), REVISED THROUGH FACIES ANALYSIS AND UNCONFORMITY-BOUNDED STRATIGRAPHIC UNITS
The Valdelsa Basin is one of the widest post-collisional basins developed in central Tuscany (Italy) since the late Miocene. More than 2,000 m of upper Miocene-Quaternary deposits fill the basinExpand
Extension- and compression-related basins in central Italy during the Messinian Lago-Mare event
Abstract During the Messinian Lago - Mare event, in the central Mediterranean area, compression- and extension-related basins developed as a consequence of the post-Tortonian evolution of theExpand
The stratigraphic record of the Messinian salinity crisis in the northern margin of the Bajo Segura Basin (SE Spain)
Abstract The Bajo Segura Basin is a marginal basin of the Western Mediterranean located on the eastern end of the Betic Cordillera (southeastern Spain). Its Messinian and Pliocene stratigraphicExpand
Paleoenvironmental changes at the Messinian Pliocene boundary in the eastern Mediterranean (southern Cyprus basins): significance of the Messinian Lago-Mare

Sedimentary and tectonic evolution of the Vena del Gesso basin (Northern Apennines, Italy): Implications for the onset of the Messinian salinity crisis
The integration of field and subsurface data permits a substantial revision of the sedimentary evolution of the Vena del Gesso basin, a thrust-top basin in the Northern Apennines where shallow-waterExpand
Tectonics and sequence stratigraphy in Messinian basins, Sicily: Constraints on the initiation and termination of the Mediterranean salinity crisis
Deposits within the Caltanissetta basin of central Sicily have been important for developing the desiccating deep basin model for the Messinian salinity crisis in the Mediterranean. Linked structuralExpand
