The electronic readout of the CMS tracking system

Abstract

A description is given of the electronic readout system proposed by the CMS experiment for the microstrip tracker. It is an analogue system based on a front end chip development by RD20 and analogue optical links being developed by RD23. Both gas and silicon microstrips are read out by the same system with minor modifications to the front end chips to accommodate the different detector characteristics. The system must run at up to 100kHz level 1 trigger frequency.
