The effect of Selenium (Se) supplementation at five levels of 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20 µM in plants supplied with one of four concentrations of sulphur (S) including 0.05, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mM was investigated in two varieties of Brassica oleracea (cabbage and kohlrabi) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in a hydroponic experiment. In severely S deficient plants (0.05 mM), Se acted as a toxic element, alfalfa was the most susceptible plant that died at this treatment. However, in plants…

Effects of selenium application on biochemical characteristics and biofortification level of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes) produce.
The outcomes of the present research demonstrated the high benefits of Se application in improving kohlrabi yield and nutritional quality.
Effect of selenium on macro- and microelement distribution and physiological parameters of rape and wheat seedlings exposed to cadmium stress
The Cd stress and the protective role of Se were most evident in rape, and the Finnish wheat genotype was less tolerant to Cd than the Polish one, indicating an activity of detoxifying SH groups and SOD isoenzymes.
Impact of Se (VI) fertilization on Se concentration in different parts of red cabbage plants
We studied the effects of selenium [Se (VI)] on the physiological characteristics of red cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L. f. rubra, cv. Erfurtsko rano) and the ability of the plants
Effect of form and dose of selenium on yielding and contents of macronutrients in maize
The purpose of the conducted experiment was to estimate the influence of the form and dose of selenium on yielding and N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S content in the above ground parts of maize. The experiment
Germination-enhancing and zinc-sparing roles for selenium in broccoli
Large areas of China have soils low in both available selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn). In order to investigate whether Se supplied as either selenate or selenite can increase germination and growth
Selenium Accumulation and Biochemical Composition of Brassica Grains Grown in Selenate- or Selenite-Treated Alkaline Sandy Loam Soil
Brassica plants grown in an alkaline sandy loam soil treated with different levels of selenate selenium (Se) or selenite Se contained Se within safe limits and thus is safe for human consumption.
Effect of Se-Enriched Irrigation Water on the Biomass Production and Elemental Composition of Green Bean, Cabbage, Potato and Tomato
The use of Se-enriched irrigation water might be a suitable method for Se biofortification without a significant reduction in plant biomass production and without a remarkable modification of other macro- and microelement contents.

Effects of pH and selenium oxidation state on the selenium accumulation and yield of alfalfa
Abstract Experiments were performed in greenhouse sand culture to determine the effect of pH and Se oxidation state on the tissue composition and yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Alfalfa was
Effect of salinity and its composition on the accumulation of selenium by alfalfa
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was grown in greenhouse sand culture to examine the effect of salinity composition and concentration on Se accumulation by plants. In a 2×2×4 factorial experiment,
Accumulation and volatilization of different chemical species of selenium by plants
Reduction from SeO4 to SeO3 appears to be a rate-limiting step in the production of volatile Se compounds by plants, and inhibitory effects of sulfate on the uptake and volatilization of Se may be reduced substantially if Se is supplied as, or converted to, SeO 3 and/or SeMeth rather than SeO 4.
Differences in the mode of absorption of selenite and selenate, and in the distribution and chemical form of Se found in the plant after absorption, probably account for this disparity in toxicity.
Alteration of selenium transport and volatilization in barley (Hordeum vulgare) by arsenic
Summary The investigation of interaction between arsenic and selenium indicated that effects on both selenate transport and Se metabolism were involved. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings were
Plant availability of selenite and selenate as influenced by the competing ions phosphate and sulfate
The relative plant availability of selenate versus selenite depends on the concentrations of competing ions, specifically sulfate and phosphate, respectively. In solution culture, the concentration
Irrigation Method Affects Selenium Accumulation in Forage Brassica Species
Abstract A greenhouse study was conducted in sand cultures to compare the effects of saline irrigation waters applied by two different methods, flooding and above‐canopy sprinkling, on selenium (Se)
Selenium as an anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant in ryegrass
Selenium is an essential element for antioxidation reactions in human and animals. In order to study its biological role in higher plants, ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was cultivated in a soil without
Selenium Assimilation and Volatilization from Selenocyanate-Treated Indian Mustard and Muskgrass1
Indian mustard is promising for the phytoremediation of SeCN−-contaminated soil and water because of its remarkable abilities to phytoextract Se CN− and degrade all the accumulated SeCN − to other Se forms.
Regulation of sulfate uptake by excised barley roots in the presence of selenate.
S-Se discrimination is mainly operating at the level of amino acid incorporation into proteins, where the presence of Se-amino acids blocks this incorporation and brings about an accumulation of free amino acids; at the same time carrier activity is inhibited.
