Tympanic membrane (TM) perforations heal by reepithelialization and fibrous layer proliferation. The rat TM model may be used to study growth factors that promote epithelialization and fibroblast proliferation, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF).
