Abstract The lower reaches of the Boro River were dredged in the early 1970s to increase water flow from the Okavango Swamps to the Diamond Mine at Orapa. Colonization of the spoil heaps was originally studied in 1973 and 1974, and then again in 1979. From transects taken across undredged portions of the river and accounts in the literature, a picture of the natural colonization and vegetation zonation of the Boro is constructed.
