Samples of a marteiliad parasite in Mytilus galloprovincialis Lmk. from NW Spain were identified as Marteilia refringens, using light and electron microscopy. The most important lesions in the mussel tissues were found in the digestive tubules at the moment of the release of the sporangia, resulting in a breakage of the epithelial cells of the digestive tubules.
