OBJECTIVES To explore the association between schizophrenic symptoms and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and to investigate the effect of classic antipsychotic haloperidol plus the extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb) on SOD. METHODS In 54 patients with chronic refractory schizophrenia, 27 were treated with haloperidol plus EGb (group 1), and the rest received haloperidol plus placebo (group 2). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels of these patients were measured before and after treatment and compared… Expand
A placebo-controlled study of extract of ginkgo biloba added to clozapine in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia
Preliminary data suggested that EGb was found useful for enhancing the effect of clozapine on negative symptoms in patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Expand
Review and meta-analysis of usage of ginkgo as an adjunct therapy in chronic schizophrenia.
The roles of antioxidants in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, whether the properties of ginkgo can ameliorate symptoms of this illness, and available literature to test this assumption are reviewed are reviewed. Expand
Cu, Zn- and Mn-superoxide dismutase levels in brains of patients with schizophrenic psychosis
Detection of SOD changes in the brain supports previous reports of alterations of antioxidant indices in blood cells of patients with schizophrenia and suggests a specific neuroanatomical distribution pattern of oxidative stress processes possibly related to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Expand
Obesity, altered oxidative stress, and clinical correlates in chronic schizophrenia patients
The results suggested that oxidative stress may play an important role in antipsychotic-induced weight gain and further investigations using the longitudinal design in first-episode schizophrenia patients are needed to explore the beneficial effect of antioxidants on the abnormal lipid metabolism mediated by antipsychotics. Expand
Natural Medicines for Psychotic Disorders
In 110 randomized controlled trials, evidence was found for glycine, sarcosine, N-acetylcysteine, some Chinese and ayurvedic herbs, ginkgo biloba, estradiol, and vitamin B6 to improve psychotic symptoms when added to antipsychotics. Expand
The CNS effects of Ginkgo biloba extracts and ginkgolide B
The aim of this review is to critically evaluate the current evidence on the CNS effects of EGb-761 and ginkgolide B, with particular emphasis on the data relating to their neuroprotective effects. Expand
Advancing Neuroprotective-Based Treatments for Schizophrenia
In this chapter substantial information about clinical trials with neurosteroids, vitamins, and some herbal supplements with neuroprotective properties in schizophrenia is presented and the authors hope that neuroProtective strategies will pave the way to the next generation of antipsychotic, sedative and mood stabilizer medications. This overview is focused on the stress‐alleviating and vigilance‐enhancing properties of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) that have been observed in animal models and in humans and that appear usefulExpand
Interações entre fármacos e medicamentos fitoterápicos à base de ginkgo ou ginseng
The aim of this paper was to review the literature in order to identify reported interactions between ginkgo or ginseng herbal medicines and drugs as well as to evaluate and summarize these information. Expand
