An appreciable amount of serum and skin interferon was produced in guinea pigs during herpes simplex virus infection. When such guinea pigs were subjected to various experimental trauma the production of interferon was generally decreased. Systemic and local injections of purified interferon confered definite protection against herpes simplex virus infection by the cutaneous, peritoneal and intravenous routes and little or no protection by the intracerebral, intranasal, or corneal routes… CONTINUE READING
