The design of ionic liquids has been focused on the cation-anion combinations but other more subtle approaches can be used. In this work the effect of the branching of the cation alkyl chain on the design of ionic liquids (ILs) is evaluated. The mutual solubilities with water and toxicities of a series of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-based ILs, combined with imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, and piperidinium cations with linear or branched alkyl chains, are reported. The mutual solubility…

A Rational Approach to CO2 Capture by Imidazolium Ionic Liquids: Tuning CO2 Solubility by Cation Alkyl Branching.

Branching at the alkyl side chain of the imidazolium cation in ionic liquids (ILs) was evaluated towards its effect on carbon dioxide (CO2) solubilization and results in sponge-like ILs with enhanced capabilities for CO2 capture.

Ammonium Ionic Liquid Solubilities in Water and Micellar Formation.

A number of proposed applications for ionic liquids (ILs) involve IL/water interfaces, such as chemical separations or drug delivery. Therefore, an understanding of the solubility and micellar

In the present paper a study of the liquid phase behavior in aqueous systems of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with the bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide anion is addressed. To highlight the

Comparative study of the intermolecular dynamics of imidazolium-based ionic liquids with linear and branched alkyl chains: OHD-RIKES measurements.

A comparative study of the low-frequency (0-450 cm-1) Kerr spectra of the branched 1-(iso-alkyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide and that of the linear 1-(n-alksyl)- 3-methine-3- methylimidsulfonation ([CNC1im] with N = 2-7] ILs.

Impact of Surface-Active Guanidinium-, Tetramethylguanidinium-, and Cholinium-Based Ionic Liquids on Vibrio Fischeri Cells and Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine Liposomes

The toxicity of the ILs in this study was mainly determined by the surface-active anions, while cations induced a minor impact on the toxicity.

Mutual solubility of water and structural/positional isomers of N-alkylpyridinium-based ionic liquids.

The main goal of this work is to study the isomeric effects on the pyridinium-based cation, namely, the structural and positional isomerism, as well as the alkyl side chain length.

Mutual solubilities of water and hydrophobic ionic liquids.

From experimental measurements of the temperature dependence of ionic liquid solubilities in water, the thermodynamic molar functions of solution, such as Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy at infinite dilution were determined, showing that the solubility of these ILs in water is entropically driven and that the anion solvation at the IL-rich phase controls their solubabilities in water.

Thermophysical Properties and Water Saturation of [PF6]-Based Ionic Liquids

In this work, mutual solubilities of two [PF6]-based ionic liquids (ILs) with water and their thermophysical properties, namely, melting properties of pure ILs and densities and viscosities of both

Mutual solubilities of water and the [C(n)mim][Tf(2)N] hydrophobic ionic liquids.

COSMO-RS, a model based on unimolecular quantum chemistry calculations, was evaluated for the description of the binary systems investigated providing an acceptable agreement between the model predictions and the experimental data both with the temperature dependence and with the ILs structural variations.

Nano-segregation in ionic liquids: scorpions and vanishing chains.

The present study analyses the large structural differences between 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids, [Cnmim][Ntf2] and their counterparts with ether-substituted alkyl side chains, [(C1OC1)(n/3)mim[NTF2] (n = 3, 6, 9) to demonstrate the suppression of the nanostructured nature is persistent along the entire series.

Designing ionic liquids: the chemical structure role in the toxicity

The results here reported suggest the possibility of designing ILs with an enhanced hydrophobic character and lower toxicity, by elimination of their aromatic nature.
