Today, digital games are available on a variety of mobile devices, such as tablet devices, portable game consoles and smart phones. [...] Key Method Study One uses mixed reality games to investigate whether the integration of the real world environment reduces engagement. Whereas Study Two explored the effects of manipulating the lighting level, and therefore reducing visibility, of the surroundings. We found that immersion is reduced in the conditions where visibility of the surroundings is high. We argue that…Expand
Immersion and players' time perception in digital games
TLDR
A series of experimental investigations to discover the relationship between immersion on players' time perception during a gaming session and the result suggests that participants either overestimate or underestimate time whilst playing suggests both immersion and players'Time perception are rather sensitive. Expand
The Placebo Effect in Digital Games: Phantom Perception of Adaptive Artificial Intelligence
TLDR
The hypothesis that even basic instructions can change players' perception of the game, and lead to a higher level of perceived immersion when knowing that the game contains an improved feature, the adaptive artificial intelligence (AI), while it is not present in the game. Expand
Examining the Effects of Lighting Effects on Peripheral Devices for Visual User Notifications
TLDR
A preliminary NASA TLX experiment was performed to examine the effect that notifications displayed on a peripheral device has, in comparison to traditional dialog notifications, which will prove useful to create notification design guidance for these devices. Expand
Adapting Epic Theatre Principles for the Design of Games for Learning
TLDR
Recommendations for designing games for learning to be played outside the context of formal education, which explore the ways complex systems influence real human lives. Expand

TLDR
This work examines the effect of room size and furniture on the player experience of Fragments, a space- Adaptive, indoor AR crime-solving game created for the Microsoft HoloLens and proposes design suggestions that can support narrative-driven, space-adaptive indoor HMD-based AR content in delivering optimal experiences for various types of rooms. Immersive Virtual Reality Simulation Deployment in a Lean Manufacturing Environment Games Based Learning
This paper debates the necessity of implementing Virtual Reality Technology as a training tool within Lean Manufacturing Environments (LME). The topic for discussion surrounding this area is the needExpand
Immersive Virtual Reality Deployment in a Lean Manufacturing Environment
TLDR
This paper debates the necessity of implementing Virtual Reality Technology as a training tool within Lean Manufacturing Environments (LME) and the need for a user friendly package that utilizes game and advanced Virtual Reality technology to encompass the principles of the Lean approach to manufacturing. Expand
Viewers' Involvement and Responses to an Entertainment Narrative in the Personal Television Environment
This study explored the role of involvement in narrative persuasion in the personal television environment. The entertainment overcoming resistance model (EORM) has suggested that viewers’Expand

Effect of touch-screen size on game immersion
TLDR
It is found that the level of immersion is higher for the larger touch screen size in comparison with the smaller one, suggesting that different sizes of touch screen could be an important factor to influence immersion in videogames. Expand
A survey of visual, mixed, and augmented reality gaming
TLDR
A survey of visual mixed and augmented reality gaming in both the academic and commercial contexts is provided and a set of example commercial games are examined to provide the context for the state of the games on the market. Expand
Fundamental Components of the Gameplay Experience: Analysing Immersion
TLDR
A heuristic gameplay experience model is presented that identifies some of the key components and processes that are relevant in the experience of gameplay, with a particular focus on immersion. Expand
Measuring and defining the experience of immersion in games
TLDR
Overall the findings suggest that immersion can be measured subjectively as well as objectively (task completion time, eye movements) and negative emotions and uneasiness also run high. Expand
In-Game: From Immersion to Incorporation
Digital games offer a vast range of engaging experiences, from the serene exploration of beautifully rendered landscapes to the deeply cognitive challenges presented by strategic simulations to theExpand
Influence of social setting on player experience of digital games
TLDR
This study sets out to test the level of social presence of the co-player as a determinant of player experience in digital games, and demonstrates significant differences in playing against a computer, a mediated other, or a co-located other. Expand
Time perception, immersion and music in videogames
TLDR
It is found that the addition of music does alter time perception but only in one paradigm and suggests that music could be an important factor in the perception of time whilst playing videogames. Expand
Assessing the Core Elements of the Gaming Experience
TLDR
The formulation of the theory, the introduction of the model, and the use of the questionnaire in an experiment to differentiate between two different experiences are discussed. Expand
Is game immersion just another form of selective attention? : an empirical investigation of real world dissociation in computer game immersion
TLDR
A grounded theory is described that suggests that immersion is a result of self-motivated attention which is enhanced through feedback from the game, and that much of the real world is attenuated during game-play due primarily to the gamer’s motivation to continue the immersive experience. Expand
Characterising and measuring user experiences in digital games
TLDR
The applicability of traditional usability metrics to user-centred game design is discussed, and two prominent concepts, flow and immersion, are highlighted as potential candidates for evaluating gameplay. Expand
