The combined effect of superficial nanocrystallisat ion by SMAT (Surface Mechanical Attrition Treatment) followed by plasma nitriding on the mech anical properties of a medical grade austenitic stainless steel was studied. SMAT conditions were o ptimised to enhance nitrogen diffusion.
