The effect of riluzole on the survival of injured motoneurons was studied. The L4 ventral root was avulsed and reimplanted into the spinal cord. Immediately after the operation, 4 animals were treated with riluzole for 3 weeks while another 4 animals received no treatment after the operation. Three months later the fluorescent dyes, Fast Blue and Diamidino Yellow, were applied to the cut ventral ramus of the L4 spinal nerve, for retrograde labelling of neurons.
