Neuropeptide Y (NPY) when administered intracerebroventricularly is a potent stimulator of feeding and drinking in rats. In these studies we demonstrated that, in contrast, in mice NPY inhibits drinking induced by water deprivation and that associated with food intake. In addition, we found that mice failed to respond to the rat dipsogen angiotensin II. Old mice demonstrated hypodipsia compared to young mice and NPY failed to inhibit drinking in older mice.
