The rate of hexose uptake by Chlorella is reduced by uncouplers such as carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenyl hydrazone or dinitrophenol even before concentration equilibrium is reached. The addition of uncouplers changes the membrane potential and the intracellular pH.
