Veal calves were housed either tethered indoors on slatted floorings or loose in groups of eight in a semi-open barn with straw bedding. Six weeks after arrival at the station the calves were submitted to a 10-min open-field session in either the same environment as the one in which they were housed or in the alternative environment.
