Arachidonic acid (AA) is the precursor of thromboxane and prostacyclin, two of the most active compounds related to platelet function. The effect of dietary AA on platelet function in humans is not understood although a previous study suggested dietary AA might have adverse physiological consequences on platelet function. Here normal healthy male volunteers (n=10) were fed diets containing 1.7 g/d of AA for 50 d. The control diet contained 210 mg/d of AA. Platelet aggregation in the platelet…
The effect of conjugated linoleic acid on platelet function, platelet fatty acid composition, and blood coagulation in humans
TLDR
Both linoleic acid (sunflower oil) and CLA might have similar effects on platelet function and fatty acid composition was not markedly influenced by the consumption of dietary CLA, although there was a small increase in the amount of the 9 cis, 11 trans-18∶2 isomer normally present in platelets after feeding CLA for 63 days.
The effect of dietary docosahexaenoic acid on platelet function, platelet fatty acid composition, and blood coagulation in humans
TLDR
The results from this study on blood clotting parameters and in vitro platelet aggregation suggest that adding 6 g/d of dietary DHA for 90 d to a typical Western diet containing less than 50 mg/D of DHA produces no observable physiological changes in blood coagulation, platelet function, or thrombotic tendencies in healthy, adult males.
Effects of arachidonate-enriched triacylglycerol supplementation on serum fatty acids and platelet aggregation in healthy male subjects with a fish diet
TLDR
ARA concentration in serum phospholipids and TAG can be safely increased by supplementation of arachidonate-enriched TAG oil, according to a double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated in twenty-four healthy Japanese men.
Increased dietary arachidonic acid enhances the synthesis of vasoactive eicosanoids in humans
TLDR
Both indicated changes in metabolite excretion may be associated with measurable effects on several physiologically significant cellular functions, such as platelet aggregation in vivo and inflammation in response to immune challenges.
Role of Arachidonic Acid and Its Metabolites in the Biological and Clinical Manifestations of Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome
TLDR
The main fields where arachidonic acid and its metabolites may play a significant role, particularly as it pertains to their effects on the kidney and the mechanisms underlying idiopathic nephrotic syndrome are described.
A human dietary arachidonic acid supplementation study conducted in a metabolic research unit: Radionale and design
TLDR
The main indices studied were the fatty acid composition of the plasma, red blood cells, platelets, and adipose tissue; in vitro platelet aggregation, bleeding times, clotting factors; immune response as measured by delayed hypersensitivity skin tests, cellular proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in response to various mitogene and antigens, natural killer cell activity, and response to measles/mumps/rubella and influenza vaccines.
Dietary arachidonic acid dose-dependently increases the arachidonic acid concentration in human milk.
TLDR
The consumption by lactating women of AA in addition to extra (n-3) LCPUFA dose dependently increased the AA concentration of their milk TL and their changes were strongly and positively correlated with their corresponding values in erythrocyte PL.

TLDR
It is concluded that the biosynthesis and function of prostaglandins can be augmented in man by oral administration of an esterified precursor fatty acid.

Dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids influence tissue fatty acid composition in rats at weaning.
TLDR
It is suggested that dietary supplementation with 20:4-(n-6) and 22:6(n-3) influences the concentration of 20-4-6 and 22-6-3 in body tissues of rats after weaning.
Arachidonic acid and prostaglandin endoperoxide metabolism in isolated rabbit and coronary microvessels and isolated and cultivated coronary microvessel endothelial cells.
TLDR
Rabbit coronary microvessels and derived microvascular endothelial cells (RCME cells) synthesized two major products of the cyclooxygenase pathway: 6-keto-PGF1 alpha and PGE2.
Antithrombin and atherosclerosis in the Rotterdam Study.
TLDR
It is proposed that antithrombin activity rises in response to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and also in Response to the presence of atherosclerosis, whereas antithsrombin may decrease with increasing severity of the atherosclerotic process in men.
Quantitative loss of individual eicosapentaenoyl-relative to arachidonoyl-containing phospholipids in thrombin-stimulated human platelets.
TLDR
The inhibition of AA- and EPA-phospholipid degradation by trifluoperazine indicated that almost all of the release of EPA occurs from PC and PE upon thrombin stimulation and is mediated predominantly via phospholipase A2 activity with almost no contribution from PI.
