Both central serotonergic dysfunction and glucocorticoid hypersecretion have been separately implicated in the aetiology of affective disorders. The hippocampus highly expresses receptors for 5-hydroxytryptamine and glucocorticoids, and adrenalectomy alters the responsivity of hippocampal neurons to 5-hydroxytryptamine.
