Recent evidence suggests that single dose administration of ginseng can improve certain aspects of cognitive performance and mood in healthy young volunteers in a dose and time dependent manner. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acute administration of 400 mg of a standardized Panax ginseng extract (G115 .,Pharmaton SA)on mood and cognitive performance. Following a double-blind, placebo controlled, balanced, cross-over design, thirty healthy young adult volunteers received…

Effects of Panax ginseng, consumed with and without glucose, on blood glucose levels and cognitive performance during sustained ‘mentally demanding’ tasks
TLDR
Both Panax ginseng and glucose enhanced performance of a mental arithmetic task and ameliorated the increase in subjective feelings of mental fatigue experienced by participants during the later stages of the sustained, cognitively demanding task performance.
Single doses of Panax ginseng (G115) reduce blood glucose levels and improve cognitive performance during sustained mental activity
TLDR
Overall these data suggest that Panax ginseng can improve performance and subjective feelings of mental fatigue during sustained mental activity.
Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba Effects on Cognition as Modulated by Cardiovascular Reactivity: A Randomised Trial
TLDR
The results suggest that cardiovascular reactivity may be a mechanism by which ginkgo but not ginseng, in females is associated with certain forms of cognitive improvement.
Cognitive effects of two nutraceuticals Ginseng and Bacopa benchmarked against modafinil: a review and comparison of effect sizes.
TLDR
The effect sizes of positive cognitive effect of the pharmaceutical modafinil are calculated in order to benchmark the effect of two widely used nutraceuticals Ginseng and Bacopa (which have consistent acute and chronic cognitive effects, respectively).
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial investigating the acute and chronic benefits of American Ginseng (Cereboost®) on mood and cognition in healthy young adults, including in vitro investigation of gut microbiota changes as a possible mechanism of action
TLDR
This study confirmed the promising effects of Cereboost® on cognitive function and mood, while suggesting a possible link to alterations of the gut microbiome and modulation of acetylcholine.
Panax ginseng (G115) improves aspects of working memory performance and subjective ratings of calmness in healthy young adults
TLDR
The effects of Panax ginseng (G115) on subjective mood and aspects of ‘working’ memory processes, following a single dose and following sub‐chronic ingestion, in healthy volunteers are assessed.
Technologies and novel methodologies for the assessment of nutitional interventions
TLDR
The methodologies adopted are capable of detecting changes in cerebral oxygenation as a result of, nutritional challenge; differing doses of the same intervention; the synergistic effect of two different interventions, and during incremental exercise whilst performing cognitive tasks.
Panax ginseng in Randomised Controlled Trials: A Systematic Review
TLDR
P. ginseng shows promising results for improving glucose metabolism and moderating the immune response, which may have implications for several diseases including type 2 diabetes and chronic respiratory conditions.

Dose Dependent Changes in Cognitive Performance and Mood following Acute Administration of Ginseng to Healthy Young Volunteers
TLDR
There was a significant improvement in “Quality of Memory” and the associated “Secondary memory” factor at all time points following 400 mg of Ginseng, and this represents the first demonstration of a modulation of mood and cognitive performance by acute administration of Ginsang.
The memory enhancing effects of a Ginkgo biloba/Panax ginseng combination in healthy middle-aged volunteers
TLDR
The Ginkgo/ginseng combination was found significantly to improve an Index of Memory Quality, supporting a previous finding with the compound and represents the first substantial demonstration of improvements to the memory of healthy middle-aged volunteers produced by a phytopharmaceutical.
Ginseng: potential for the enhancement of cognitive performance and mood
Acute, dose‐dependent cognitive effects of Ginkgo biloba, Panax ginseng and their combination in healthy young volunteers: differential interactions with cognitive demand
TLDR
Three studies examining the acute effects of single doses of Ginkgo biloba, Ginseng and their combination on the performance of healthy young adults during serial arithmetic tasks with differing cognitive load during Serial Threes and Serial Sevens are described.
The cognitive, subjective, and physical effects of a ginkgo biloba/panax ginseng combination in healthy volunteers with neurasthenic complaints.
TLDR
On Day 90 at 1 hour post morning dosing, dose-related improvements were seen on the CDR tests, and there were also several supporting changes from other assessments, including an advantage of 320 mg over placebo on the global score from the Symptom Checklist-90-revised (SCL- 90-R) at Day 90.
Oxygen administration selectively enhances cognitive performance in healthy young adults: a placebo-controlled double-blind crossover study
TLDR
The results provided support for earlier work in that increases were found in both immediate and delayed word recall and oxygen administration significantly improved performance on several measures of attention and vigilance, consistent with the hypothesis that cognitive performance is “fuel-limited” and can be differentially augmented by increasing the availability of the brain’s metabolic resources.
