A new X-ray, UBVRIc ,a ndJHKs study of the young cluster Westerlund 2 was undertaken to resolve discrepancies tied to the cluster’s distance. Existing spectroscopic observations for bright cluster members and new multi-band photometry imply a reddening relation toward Westerlund 2 described by EU−B/EB−V = 0.63 + 0.02 EB−V . Variable-extinction analyses for Westerlund 2 and nearby IC 2581 based upon spectroscopic distance moduli and ZAMS fitting yield values of RV = AV /EB−V = 3.88±0.18 and 3.77…

Extinction in the Star Cluster SAI 113 and Galactic Structure in Carina
Photometric CCD UB VI C photometry obtained for 4860 stars surrounding the embedded southern cluster SAI 113 (Skiff 8) is used to examine the reddening in the field and derive the distance to the
The environment around the young massive star cluster RSGC 1 and HESS J1837−069
We report on Mopra observations toward the young massive star cluster RSGC 1, adjoined by, and possibly associated with the gamma-ray source HESS J1837-069. We measure the CO (J=1-0) distribution
Reddening, distance, and stellar content of the young open cluster Westerlund 2
We present deep $UBVI_C$ photometric data of the young open cluster Westerlund 2. An abnormal reddening law of $R_{V,cl}=4.14\pm0.08$ was found for the highly reddened early-type members ($E(B-V)\geq
The Massive Star-Forming Regions Omnibus X-Ray Catalog, Second Installment
We present the second installment of the Massive Star-forming Regions (MSFRs) Omnibus X-ray Catalog (MOXC2), a compilation of X-ray point sources detected in Chandra/ACIS observations of 16 Galactic
High-resolution radio emission from RCW 49/Westerlund 2
Aims. The HII region RCW 49 and its ionizing cluster form an extensive, complex region that has been widely studied at infrared (IR) and optical wavelengths. The Molonglo 843 MHz and Australia
Anchors for the cosmic distance scale: the Cepheid QZ Normae in the open cluster NGC 6067
Cepheids are key to establishing the cosmic distance scale. Therefore it’s important to assess the viability of QZ Nor, V340 Nor, and GU Nor as calibrators for Leavitt’s law via their purported
Spatial distribution of Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars and implications for the global population
We construct revised near-infrared absolute magnitude calibrations for 126 Galactic Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars at known distances, based in part upon recent large scale spectroscopic surveys. Application
Stellar populations in the Carina region: The Galactic plane at l = 291
Previous studies of the Carina region have revealed its complexity and richness as well as a significant number of early-type stars. In many cases, these studies only concentrated on the central
A High-Resolution Multiband Survey of Westerlund 2 With the Hubble Space Telescope. II. Mass accretion in the Pre-Main Sequence Population
We present a detailed analysis of the pre-main-sequence (PMS) population of the young star cluster Westerlund~2 (Wd2), the central ionizing cluster of the HII region RCW 49, using data from a high
Establishing the Galactic Centre distance using VVV Bulge RR Lyrae variables
This study’s objective was to exploit infrared VVV (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea) photometry for high latitude RRab stars to establish an accurate Galactic Centre distance. RRab candidates were
