The responses of juvenile and adult gerbils towards newborn test pups were investigated. Young animals of both sexes are less likely to attack the test pup than are older animals. Mature females are more likely to attempt to cannibalize pups than are mature males. Attempted cannibalism by adult males is inhibited when their mate becomes pregnant.
