Transepithelial fluid secretion promotes the progressive enlargement of cysts in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Recent indirect evidence indicated that active chloride transport may drive net fluid secretion in cultures of epithelia derived from ADPKD cysts.
