Simulations have been performed using the free-energy binary-liquid lattice Boltzmann method with sufficient resolution that the critical capillary number for coalescence was determined for collisions between droplets in simple shear with a small initial offset in the shear gradient direction. The simulations were used to study the behavior of the interacting interfaces and the film between them during collisions over a wide range of capillary numbers with emphasis on near-critical conditions…
Simulations of charged droplet collisions in shear flow
The effect of the viscosity ratio on band formation in sheared mixtures of phase-separated polymer solutions with ultralow interface tension
The microscopic structure and dynamics of droplet dispersions formed by phase separation of two Newtonian polymer solutions were observed under simple shear. The phases had equal volumes. Under
Hydrodynamics of passing-over motion during binary droplet collision in shear flow*
A combined experimental and numerical study is undertaken to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of single-phase droplet collision in a shear flow. The passing-over motion of interactive
Dynamics of phase separation of sheared inertialess binary mixtures
When a viscous binary mixture subject to an applied shear flow is rapidly quenched into the unstable region of its phase diagram, the resulting phase separation is influenced by two competing
Shear-Induced Migration of Rigid Particles near an Interface between a Newtonian and a Viscoelastic Fluid
TLDR
Simulations of rigid particles suspended in two-phase shear flow are presented, where one of the suspending fluids is viscoelastic, whereas the other is Newtonian, and it is deduced that the different dynamics can be described well by considering a balance in the first-normal stress difference and Laplace pressure.
Droplet–turbulence interactions and quasi-equilibrium dynamics in turbulent emulsions
We perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of emulsions in homogeneous isotropic turbulence using a pseudopotential lattice-Boltzmann (PP-LB) method. Improving on previous literature by minimizing
Three-dimensional numerical simulation of bubble rising in viscous liquids: A conservative phase-field lattice-Boltzmann study
Simulating bubble rising in viscous liquids is challenging because of the large liquid-to-gas density ratio and complex topological evolution of the gas-liquid interface. In this study, a
Phase-Field Simulation of the Coalescence of Droplets Permeating through a Fibrous Filter Obtained from X-Ray Computed Tomography Images: Effect of the Filter Microstructure.
TLDR
The authors' simulations demonstrate that the arrangement of closely attached fibers placed at the permeate-side surface enhances droplet coalescence and suppresses droplet enlargement due to the coalescence, but reduces the number of droplet passages without coalescence in the filter.
Unravelling Turbulent Emulsions with lattice-Boltzmann simulations
The mixing of two immiscible fluids, often under turbulent conditions, can lead to the formation of an emulsion, where droplets of one fluid are embedded in another fluid. The occurrence of emulsions

Simulations of droplet coalescence in simple shear flow.
TLDR
The critical capillary number for coalescence is determined and the effects of several numerical and geometric parameters are quantified by simulating droplets with radii up to 100 lattice nodes using the free-energy binary-liquid lattice Boltzmann method.
Experimental Investigation of the Orthokinetic Coalescence Efficiency of Droplets in Simple Shear Flow.
TLDR
The coalescence efficiency of two droplets in simple shear flow was experimentally investigated and it was found that the coalescent efficiency decreases and then increases with the flow number, while the capture angle and the contact time were successfully predicted.
Effect of confinement on droplet coalescence in shear flow.
TLDR
It is shown that the presence of two parallel walls can induce changes in the flow field around the droplet pair, which cause an increase of the interaction time between the droplets, and confinement clearly promotes coalescence.
The coalescence of two equal-sized drops in a two-dimensional linear flow
A four-roll mill was used to experimentally investigate the coalescence of two equal-sized drops in general linear flows. The experimental system consisted of polybutadiene drops suspended in
Satellite and subsatellite formation in capillary breakup
An investigation of the interfacial-tension-driven fragmentation of a very long fluid filament in a quiescent viscous fluid is presented. Experiments covering almost three orders of magnitude in
Binary collision of drops in simple shear flow by computer-assisted video optical microscopy
The collision of two equi-sized drops immersed in an immiscible liquid phase undergoing a shear flow in a parallel plate apparatus has been investigated over a range of capillary numbers. The drops
