Abstract

There are two approaches to implementing an integrated programme of pressure sore prevention. The first is to take a laissez faire approach to the problem and to leave it to nurses to deal with as best they can. This method, while cheap on administrative costs, tends to be inefficient because large numbers of different types of pressure relieving equipment of varying degrees of efficacy are bought from various manufacturers. This does not allow advantage to be taken of bulk discounts and it is difficult to assess the relative merits of the different types.
