A bstractThe Standard Model Higgs potential becomes unstable at large field values. After clarifying the issue of gauge dependence of the effective potential, we study the cosmological evolution of the Higgs field in presence of this instability throughout inflation, reheating and the present epoch. We conclude that anti-de Sitter patches in which the Higgs field lies at its true vacuum are lethal for our universe. From this result, we derive upper bounds on the Hubble constant during inflation… Expand
Nonsingular Cosmology from an Unstable Higgs Field
The observed value of the Higgs mass indicates an instability of the Higgs scalar at large energy scales, and hence also at large field values. In the context of early universe cosmology, this isExpand
Early Universe Higgs dynamics in the presence of the Higgs-inflaton and non-minimal Higgs-gravity couplings
Apparent metastability of the electroweak vacuum poses a number of cosmological questions. These concern evolution of the Higgs field to the current vacuum, and its stability during and afterExpand
Gravitationally produced top quarks and the stability of the electroweak vacuum during inflation
In the standard model the (Brout-Englert-)Higgs quartic coupling becomes negative at high energies rendering our current electroweak vacuum metastable, but with an instability timescale much longerExpand
Postinflationary vacuum instability and Higgs-inflaton couplings
The Higgs-inflaton coupling plays an important role in the Higgs field dynamics in the early Universe. Even a tiny coupling generated at loop level can have a dramatic effect on the fate of theExpand

Higgs field-curvature coupling and postinflationary vacuum instability
We study the post-inflationary dynamics of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs field in the presence of a non-minimal coupling $\xi|\Phi|^2R$ to gravity, both with and without the electroweak gauge fieldsExpand
Cosmological Aspects of Higgs Vacuum Metastability
The current central experimental values of the parameters of the Standard Model give rise to a striking conclusion: metastability of the electroweak vacuum is favoured over absolute stability. AExpand
Spacetime Curvature and Higgs Stability after Inflation.
TLDR
It is found that for ξ≳1, rapidly changing spacetime curvature at the end of inflation leads to significant production of Higgs particles, potentially triggering a transition to a negative-energy Planck scale vacuum state and causing an immediate collapse of the Universe. Expand

The Standard Model electroweak (EW) vacuum, in the absence of new physics below the Planck scale, lies very close to the boundary between stability and metastability, with the last option being theExpand
Electroweak stability and non-minimal coupling
The measured values of the Higgs and top quark mass indicate that the electroweak vacuum is metastable if there is no new physics below the Planck scale. This is at odds with a period of high scaleExpand

Spacetime curvature and the Higgs stability during inflation.

The standard model Higgs effective potential is computed including UV-induced curvature corrections at one-loop level and it is found that for a high inflationary scale a large curvature mass is generated due to renormalization group running of nonminimal coupling ξ. Expand

Using a "thin-wall" approximation, a proof of principle is provided that small black holes can act as seeds for vacuum decay, spontaneously nucleating a new Higgs phase centered on the black hole with a lifetime measured in millions of Planck times rather than billions of years. Expand
