Different patterns of simulated synaptic input were applied to striatal and pallidal neurones in vitro using dynamic current clamping. It was found that striatal neurones required a much larger baseline of excitatory inputs than pallidal neurones to allow spiking. Spike rates in pallidal neurones in response to applied synaptic conductances were much higher even when inhibitory input conductances dominated.
