Long-term research projects can provide important conservation benefits, not only through research specifically focused on conservation problems, but also from various incidental benefits, such as increased intensity of monitoring and building support for the protection of an area. At Gombe National Park, Tanzania, long-term research has provided at least four distinct benefits to wildlife conservation. Impacts of co-management on western chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) habitat and conservation in Nialama Classified Forest, Republic of Guinea: a satellite perspective
TLDR
The first model for co-management between local communities and government towards the sustainable utilization of forested regions in Republic of Guinea was established in the Nialama Classified Forest in 1999 and the impacts of co- management on key chimpanzee habitat between 1986 and 2009 are discussed.
Population status of chimpanzees in the Masito‐Ugalla Ecosystem, Tanzania
TLDR
Assessment of change in chimpanzee density within the Masito‐Ugalla Ecosystem by comparing results of re‐walking the same line transects in 2007 and 2014 found no statistically significant decline and it is possible that the MUE chimpanzee population has been stable over this period.
Combining Deforestation and Species Distribution Models to Improve Measures of Chimpanzee Conservation Impacts of REDD: A Case Study from Ntakata Mountains, Western Tanzania
Projects to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) are designed to reduce carbon emissions through avoided deforestation and degradation, and in many cases, to produce additional
The Conservation Impact of the American Society of Primatologists' Conservation Small Grant Program
Abstract: Given the dire condition of existing biodiversity and the limited availability of funding to protect it, conservation practitioners and scholars are increasingly recognizing the need to
Extreme Conservation Leads to Recovery of the Virunga Mountain Gorillas
TLDR
The results suggest that conventional conservation efforts prevented a severe decline of the overall population, but additional extreme measures were needed to achieve positive growth and argue for wider consideration of extreme measures.
Monitoring species of mammals using track collection by rangers in the Tilarán mountain range, Costa Rica
Although monitoring of animal populations for informed decision making is fundamental for the conservation and management of biodiversity, monitoring programs are not widely implemented. In addition,
Human-chimpanzee co-existence in non-protected areas in Sierra Leone, West Africa
TLDR
The ecological and anthropogenic drivers of chimpanzee occurrence across a highly degraded and human-impacted landscape in the south-western district of Moyamba in Sierra Leone showed that chimpanzee abundance across this landscape is affected by the distance to roads and proximity to swamps, however, settlements and human proximity did not influence in chimpanzees abundance.

Conservation Biology Framework for the Release of Wild‐Born Orphaned Chimpanzees into the Conkouati Reserve, Congo
TLDR
The decision-making process that led to the successive release of 20 wild-born orphan chimpanzees into the Conkouati Reserve in the Republic of Congo was described and broad benefits to the site through effective protection from poaching and deforestation, and direct and indirect benefits to local people.
Community Conservation and the Future of Africa's Wildlife
Abstract: The term community-based conservation (CBC) refers to wildlife conservation efforts that involve rural people as an integral part of a wildlife conservation policy. The key elements of such
Using retrospective health data from the Gombe chimpanzee study to inform future monitoring efforts
TLDR
A survey of behavioral data records spanning 44 years for health‐related data found a combination of standardized and nonstandardized data for the entire period, and describes how the current monitoring effort at Gombe was designed based on the findings.
The subspecies concept in primatology: The case of mountain gorillas
TLDR
An examination of genetic, morphological, biogeographic, ecological, and behavioral evidence indicates that reclassifying Bwindi gorillas as taxonomically distinct from those in the Virungas is not well supported and needs further study.
Is the chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, an endangered species? It depends on what “endangered” means

    Primates
  • 2005
TLDR
Relatively speaking, P. troglodytes is less endangered than are orangutans or gorillas, and the species is unlikely to go extinct by the year 2100, especially if existing conservation measures improve.
Recent developments in the study of wild chimpanzee behavior
TLDR
Results from field research conducted in the Kibale National Park, Uganda are focused on, giving special emphasis to five areas: social organization, genetics and behavior, hunting and meat-eating, inter-group relationships, and behavioral endocrinology.
West African chimpanzees : status survey and conservation action plan
TLDR
The aim of this publication is to halt or reverse the decline in chimpanzee numbers in West Africa by increasing awareness of their plight and by presenting a plan for action that represents a consensus among all parties concerned with the conservation of chimpanzees.
Primate conservation in the new millennium: The role of scientists
TLDR
Because 96 primate species are now considered to be critically endangered or endangered, much must be done in the near future to ensure that extinction curves do not lag behind tropical deforestation and high levels of commercial and subsistence hunting.
Catastrophic ape decline in western equatorial Africa
TLDR
Survey results conservatively indicate that ape populations in Gabon declined by more than half between 1983 and 2000, and gorillas and common chimpanzees should be elevated immediately to ‘critically endangered’ status.
